World Radio Day

On 13 February 2019, UNESCO will celebrate the 8th annual World Radio Day. The day marks a time where people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives.
Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities.
Radio: Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace
The theme for 2019 is all about the impact of radio in pursuit of a more peaceful and tolerant world as a force for civic participation and development as well as for celebrating humanity in its diversity.
World Radio Day is excited to celebrate radio’s critical function, by providing a platform for radio stations, and listeners alike, to construct their programs and conversations around dialogue, tolerance and peace.
Promoting Dialogue and Participation
Radio can be an excellent platform for dialogue and civic participation that allows different perspectives on conflicting issues to be shared, so as to raise awareness, inspire understanding and pave the way for positive action.
Uniting under common concerns
Radio has the power to bring the population together by stimulating public debate on common issues of concern. Focusing on common causes, people can raise above their difference and work together to address common concerns.
World Radio Day 2019: How to get involved
UNESCO invites all radio stations and supporting organisations to join us on 13 February for World Radio Day 2019, a chance to celebrate radio and highlight the importance of radio as a medium through the lens of this year’s WRD theme – Radio: Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace! Radio is still the most accessible, reactive and engaging medium there is, informing and transforming us, through news, entertainment and audience participation.
