Koode Radio Aims to Reduce Conflict in Africa

Nigeria — Koode Radio International, a new shortwave program with considerable goals, has begun broadcasting to much of Western Africa.
With programs in the Fulani (or Fula) language, KRI aims to “educate, enlighten and entertain” its listeners, the Fulbe people. This predominantly Muslim, nomadic herder and farmer group is spread across Africa from Senegal in the west to Lake Chad in the east. Dialects of the language are spoken in some 20 countries and the station chose the name “Koode” because it means “star” in all of the dialects.

While some Fulbe are able to communicate via the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook, others cannot. Because a number of Fulbe are herders, they are not only beyond the range of the internet, but beyond the range of electricity.
RADIO IS VITAL
Radio is paramount for them. “A well-decorated portable radio is often part of a dowry,” explains Usman Shehu, the founder of KRI.  But not just any radio. Given the distances involved, only shortwave can reach the Fulbe herders.
There are tens of millions of Fulbe, but there are no Western news broadcasters who provide programs in the language, although Adventist World Radio does have religious broadcasts in Fulani. KRI, thus, rose to the challenge and started online broadcasts last April while it requested funding from potential donors. When none was forthcoming, KRI took out a loan with a German bank and began shortwave transmissions in late December.
Hawe Bouba, KRI freelance correspondent in Cameroon (left) works with Sa’ad Abubakar, freelance correspondent in Adamawa state in northern Nigeria (middle); and Ahmed Arab Azare, KRI editor in the KRI studio in Abuja.
The initial broadcasts took place for 30 minutes a day using 100 kW of power from a shortwave site in Issoudun, France. The station subsequently increased the power to 250 kW in late February in order to reach a wider audience.
KRI airs educational programs on issues pertaining to agriculture, health, and civics as well as programs specifically for women and young people. The station is also working for peace in two conflicts.
OBJECTIVES
One objective is to reduce the recruitment of Fulbe people into the ranks of extremist groups, such as Boko Haram. The other is to ease the ongoing contention between herders and farmers. And while the conflict with Boko Haram is well known, the latter struggle actually claims more lives, according to the International Crisis Group.
“One of the main reasons of deadly conflicts between farmers and herders is the environmental factor,” explains Shehu.  KRI aims to educate herders about climate change and work toward developing coping mechanisms for peaceful co-existence.
[Read: Does Shortwave Have a Future]
If they can secure the funding, KRI hopes to expand to two hours a day using 500 kW of power. An increase in hours will make it easier for this rising star to achieve its goal of becoming the number one radio station for the Fulbe people across the continent.

WorldDAB to host DAB+ session at MedPi 2019, Paris

WorldDAB has announced it will run a DAB+ information workshop at the annual consumer distribution networks event - MedPi 2019 - taking place in Paris on 2-4 April 2019.

The workshop, jointly organised by MedPi and WorldDAB, will take place on Wednesday 3 April at 16:00 CET, and will focus on the accelerated deployment of DAB+ digital radio in France and how retailers can benefit from new business opportunities represented by the growing DAB+ market.

The WorldDAB workshop will be an opportunity for retailers to:

•    Find out about EU and French regulations concerning DAB+ digital radio
•    Discover and discuss business and retail opportunities related to DAB+ in 2020 and beyond
•    Learn how to communicate about DAB+ to end users and improve consumer recognition of DAB+ using the new DAB+ logo and full branding toolkit

In December 2018 the European Commission adopted a new directive stating that all new cars sold within the European Union will be required to include DAB+ digital radio as standard from December 2020. This law, which will enable drivers to benefit from digital services throughout Europe in their new car, requires each EU Member State to introduce by the end of 2020 draft its own, national legislation to ensure the directive is complied with.

France has already triggered its own national regulation complying with the directive following the launches of DAB+ in Lyon and Strasbourg in December 2018. According to the French regulation all new consumer radios sold by the end of 2019 are to include DAB+, while automotive receivers have until of June 2020 to comply with the legislation.

“DAB+ has made significant progress both in Europe and in France over the last year, and this is reflected by the introduction of new regulations promoting the adoption of DAB+ digital radio”, commented WorldDAB’s Jean-Marc Dubreuil. “The objective of the WorldDAB workshop at MedPi is to help retailers realise the business opportunities and potential of DAB+ digital radio, and provide some guidance as to how they can effectively communicate the DAB+ message and the changing nature of radio to consumers”.

Currently available to over 20% of the population of France, DAB+ is now being launched across the country, with 70% of the population expected to be covered by the end of 2020. This creates an enormous opportunity for retailers and receiver manufacturers in a market that totals five million units sold per year.

MedPi is a three-day business event taking place annually in France. This year’s event, which will be taking place at the Paris Convention Center on 2-4 April 2019, is designed to help buyers select product ranges to be carried by the various consumer distribution networks.

little intimidating for a beginner.

Shortwave listening can be a little intimidating for a beginner. Here at C.Crane, we think shortwave is a very useful tool and can give you a global perspective. Instead of getting all your news and information from providers within your country, why not get a different view from someone across the ocean? Below is a quick start guide on how to start your shortwave journey.
1. Understanding What Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) Is.
UTC is the agreed time used by most shortwave broadcasters globally. Click here to find out what your local UTC is.

2. Picking The Right Shortwave Radio For You.
There are a couple of things to check before purchasing a radio for shortwave:
Make sure the radio has a wide frequency coverage on the shortwave band. We recommend between 2300 to 26100 kHz coverage.
The more sensitivity the better. If you have a sensitive radio you will be able to pick up more broadcasts.
Recommended Shortwave Radios
3. Finding Shortwave Stations and Broadcasts.
Shortwave broadcasters schedule their broadcasts to take full advantage of atmospheric conditions to reach their target audience. With just a little skill, you'll know when and where to listen in order to hear your selection. See our frequencies by country list below.
https://www.ccrane.com/expert-advice/all/1/article/14…!
4. Reading kHz vs. MHz Frequencies.
What's the difference between the two? Only three decimal places.
For example:
9740 kHz = 9.740 MHz
17830 kHz = 17.830 MHz
We recommend to stick with kHz
